""Previously our garden felt gloomy and quite oppressive. Now it's bright and inviting with both a sophisticated entertaining area and a lovely lawn for the children to run about on - it draws us all outside.""

Help! We're living in Steptoes yard

"It's like having another room - we're always outside now."

Our client lives in an old cottage and, over the years had accumulated a lot of stuff, much of which was stored in a scruffy tarmac yard which also housed a well, an unwanted tree, a half-ton safe and an outside loo without a roof. He and his fiancé's brief was for a character courtyard with fencing that didn't make the garden feel too dark or "boxed in", raised bed planting and a storage area.

The scheme our clients accepted was a calm, airy courtyard with a raised brick firepit to sit around with friends. On the floor we used Bradstone Milldale paving slabs laid in a random pattern. The raised beds used textured red bricks topped with one of our clients "finds" - reclaimed Victorian blue bricks. Shade loving shrubs and climbers were planted to soften the hard landscaping and specially made trellis panels were stained a sympathetic silver/grey shade and used as fencing to screen the garden rather than shut it in and provide a framework for the climbing plants and strings of solar fairy lights. We put a slate roof on the old outside loo turning it into winter logstore.
